Our first decade living with Diabetes

Posted by scottstgelais

In 1999, my wife Connie was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Over the course of the last decade, our lives have changed drastically. It’s hard to remember of a time when we didn’t have vials of insulin and packages of syringes in our house. Not to mention several glucose meters and strips, glucose tablets and a ‘sharps’ container.

We now have blood pressure monitor, band-aids everywhere for after talking a blood sample and a small pharmacy in our kitchen cabinet from all of the complications due to her diabetes. All we had when the kids were growing up was a thermometer, which we still have.

We have a collection of items that we have acquired over the last ten years, due to the complications brought on by her diabetes. Like the walker and two back braces from when she had her lower back rebuilt and the eye patches from having the corneas in both her eyes replaced.

I have always been good with electronics, having repaired audio / video equipment and almost every type of personal computer, but I feel helpless as I cannot ‘repair’ my wife. All of the love in the world cannot make her damaged body healthy. All of the love in the world cannot cure her diabetes.

Only research can help my wife Connie and the millions of people living diabetes. This is why I am walking and raising funds for the American Diabetes Association’s signature fundraising walk, Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes.

Every step I take and every dollar I raise will make a difference in the lives of 23.6 million Americans living with diabetes. By making a donation on my behalf, you will be helping the Association provide community-based education programs, protect the rights of people with diabetes and fund critical research for a cure.

No matter how small or large, your generous donation will help us stop diabetes.
