How to install and manage fonts in Windows 11

Windows 11 makes it easy to expand your font library, whether you need a specific font for a creative project or a business document, or want to add variety to your text. Here is how to install and manage fonts in Windows 11.

Downloading fonts

The first step is to acquire the fonts you wish to install. There are several sources available, including:

• Microsoft Store: The easiest and safest option. Windows 11 includes a direct link to the Microsoft Store font section from within Settings, offering a mix of free and paid fonts that install automatically with no additional steps. See the Installing fonts from the Microsoft Store section below for details.
• Official font websites: Websites like Google Fonts and Adobe Fonts offer many free and premium fonts.
• Font marketplaces: Platforms such as My Fonts and Fontspring offer a wide range of commercial fonts for purchase.
• Free font repositories: Sites like DaFont and 1001 Free Fonts offer a variety of free fonts. However, you should always check the licensing agreement before using a font in a commercial project.

After selecting your desired font, download it in a compatible format — typically TTF (TrueType Font) or OTF (OpenType Font). Downloaded fonts often come packaged in a ZIP file, so you will need to extract the contents before installing.

Installing fonts in Windows 11

There are several ways to install fonts in Windows 11.

Preview a font before installing

Before installing a font, it is a good idea to preview it first. To preview a font, double-click on the font file. This will open the font preview window, which displays the font name, version, and type, along with a sample of the font at multiple sizes using the phrase "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog."

You can also click the Print button to print a preview of the font. If you are happy with how the font looks, click the Install button to install it for the current user account only.

Right-clicking on the font file

You can also install a font by right-clicking on the font file in File Explorer

and selecting either Install or Install for all users from the context menu.

• Install: Installs the font for the current user account only.
• Install for all users: Installs the font system-wide, making it available to all user accounts on the computer. This option may require administrator privileges.

Drag and drop

Windows 11 also supports drag-and-drop font installation. To use this method:

1. Left-click on the Start button to bring up the Start menu.
2. In the list of pinned apps on the Start menu, left-click on Settings (gear icon).
3. In the left-hand column, left-click on Personalization.
4. In the right-hand column, left-click on Fonts.
5. Open File Explorer using the Windows logo key + E and navigate to the folder containing your font files.

Installing fonts from the Microsoft Store

1. Left-click on the Start button to bring up the Start menu.
2. In the list of pinned apps on the Start menu, left-click on Settings (gear icon).
3. In the left-hand column, left-click on Personalization.
4. In the right-hand column, left-click on Fonts.
5. Click Get more fonts in the Microsoft Store to open the Microsoft Store font section.

Here you will find a wide selection of free and paid fonts. Once you find a font you would like, click on it and select Get for free fonts, or click the price button for paid fonts. The font installs automatically and appears in your Fonts settings immediately — no additional steps required.

Verifying font installation

After installing a font, it is a good idea to confirm that the installation was successful. To verify:

1. Left-click on the Start button to bring up the Start menu.
2. In the list of pinned apps on the Start menu, left-click on Settings (gear icon).
3. In the left-hand column, left-click on Personalization.
4. In the right-hand column, left-click on Fonts.
5. Use the Search fonts box at the top of the page to search for the name of the font you just installed.
   
   If it appears in the results, the installation was successful.

You can also verify the font by opening an application such as Microsoft Word or Notepad and checking whether the font appears in the font selection menu.

Managing fonts in Windows 11

Windows 11 provides two ways to manage your installed fonts, through Settings and through the Legacy Fonts Control Panel.

Managing fonts in Settings

To access font management in Settings:

1. Left-click on the Start button to bring up the Start menu.
2. In the list of pinned apps on the Start menu, left-click on Settings (gear icon).
3. In the left-hand column, left-click on Personalization.
4. In the right-hand column, left-click on Fonts.

Here you will see a grid of all the fonts installed on your computer. Each font shows a sample of the text and the number of font faces included in the family. From this view you can:

• Preview a font: Click on any font in the grid to open its detail page. At the top, you will find an interactive preview box where you can type your own text to see how it looks in that font. Below the preview box, you can use the Change font size slider to adjust the preview size and see all available font faces in the family, such as Regular, Bold, Italic, and more. A Metadata section at the bottom displays the full font name and the font file location on your computer.
• Hide a font: If you want to reduce clutter in your application's font menus without permanently removing it, you can hide it. Click the three dots (...) options menu on any font in the grid and select Hide. Hidden fonts will no longer appear in your application's font menus but will remain installed on your computer and can be unhidden at any time. Note that the Hide option is only available from the font grid view, not from the individual font detail page.
• Uninstall a font: To remove a font permanently, click the three dots (...) options menu on any font in the grid and select Uninstall. You can also uninstall a font from its detail page by clicking the Uninstall button at the bottom of the page.

Managing fonts via the Legacy Fonts Control Panel

You can also manage fonts using the legacy Fonts Control Panel, accessible by navigating to C:\Windows\Fonts in File Explorer. This view provides additional detail not available in Settings, including font styles, designer and foundry information, font category, and font embeddability rights.

From this view, you can right-click on any font to access options including Preview, Print, Hide, and Delete (the equivalent of Uninstall in Settings).

Please note that Windows 11 is in the process of phasing out the legacy Fonts Control Panel in favor of the Settings app. A notice at the top of the page advises users to go to Settings for font management going forward. The legacy interface remains available for now, but Settings is the recommended path.

Tips for using fonts

• Preview before committing: Before incorporating a new font into a document or project, take a few minutes to test it in a real application such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, or even Notepad. A font that looks great in isolation may not work as well with your existing layout, colors, or other fonts.
• Check the license before you use it: Not all free fonts are free for every purpose. Many fonts downloaded from free repositories are licensed for personal use only and require a separate commercial license for business or paid projects. • Use the Hide feature to stay organized: If your font menus are getting long and unwieldy, take advantage of the Hide option in Windows 11 font settings. Hiding fonts you rarely use keeps your menus manageable without permanently removing fonts you might need later.
