Store, access and share your files on the cloud for free with Google Drive

Being in the computer repair business, I find myself going between my workstation, netbook and smartphone quite often. I need to be able to view / edit files on all of my devices and have the changes synchronize back. I'm talking any type of file, not just MP3's and JPG's. I can do just that and more for free with Google Drive.

Google Drive, a cloud based storage solution, is the latest addition to Google's catalog of products. With the Google Drive application installed on your computer, smartphone or tablet, you can view / edit files on that device using the programs installed on it. The files then sync back to the Google Drive servers when they are closed. I found it to work great at synchronizing files / folders between my workstation, netbook and smartphone.

Or you can use a web browser to view / edit files directly on the cloud with the web based Google Docs (you get instant access when you sign up for Google Drive). Google Drive also integrates into Gmail and Google+, so you can e-mail and share files with one click. You get 5 GB's of space for free, with larger plans (up to 16 TB) available. There are also business plans too. Here's a quote from the Google Drive website:

Google Drive. Keep everything. Share anything.

Access everywhere.
Google Drive is everywhere you are-on the web, in your home, at the office and on the go. So wherever you are, your stuff is just...there. Ready to go, ready to share. Get started with 5 GB free.

    Google Drive is available for:
  • PC and Mac
  • iPhone and iPad (coming soon)
  • Android devices

Store your files in a safe place.
Things happen. Your phone goes for a swim. Your laptop takes an infinite snooze. No matter what happens to your devices, your files are safely stored in Google Drive.

Go beyond storage. Collaborate.
Google Drive lets you do more than just store your files. Share files with exactly who you want and edit them together, from any device. Google Drive gives you instant access to Google Docs, a suite of editing tools that makes working together better, even when your teammates are miles away.

Work better with the products you use everyday.

Gmail
Say goodbye to bulky email attachments. Send a link from Google Drive in Gmail and everyone has the same file, same version—automatically.

Google+
Your videos and pictures in Google Drive are instantly available in Google+, so you’re never more than one click away from sharing with your circles.

Google opens web based Android Market

The one thing I love about my Android based smartphone, is the availability of applications for it. And finding and installing Android applications just got easier. Google has recently opened a web based version of the Android Market.

The website is clean and easy to navigate, with clearly marked tabs. I found amount of applications to be the most available for Android based hardware anywhere. I found quite a few that I had never seen on the Verizon version of the Android Market application.

I browsed through a few categories and found an application to download. Remember that you have to be signed into your g-mail account associated with your phone to install any applications. I clicked on install and got the following prompt asking for the installation location. I selected my phone and clicked install.

Got a confirmation that the app would be downloaded to my Android.

I checked my phone and sure enough, on the status bar on top, was an icon indicating an app had be installed. A quick check confirmed the installation of the application.

This is, by far, the easiest away to find and install Android applications I have found to date. Hands down the best! If you have a Android powered device, I highly recommend you go over to Google Play and take a look around.

Create and track short URL's with Google URL Shortener

In this article, I am going to talk about a new service from Google called Google URL Shortener. Actually, it's been around since December of 2009 as a feature of Feedburner and the Google Toolbar. Recently, Google has developed it into a stand alone website.

Google URL Shortener

I know what you're thinking, another web site that shortens URL's. Well, you would be right, except for the fact that Google has integrated analytics into the URL's it generates. All you need to have is a Google account (and who doesn't now a days) to access the analytic data. Here's a couple of quotes from the Google Social Web Blog:

There are many shorteners out there with great features, so some people may wonder whether the world really needs yet another. As we said late last year, we built goo.gl with a focus on quality. With goo.gl, every time you shorten a URL, you know it will work, it will work fast, and it will keep working. You also know that when you click a goo.gl shortened URL, you’re protected against malware, phishing and spam using the same industry-leading technology we use in search and other products. Since our initial release, we’ve continued to invest in the core quality of the service:

  • Stability: We’ve had near 100% uptime since our initial launch, and we’ve worked behind the scenes to make goo.gl even stabler and more robust.
  • Security: We’ve added automatic spam detection based on the same type of filtering technology we use in Gmail.
  • Speed: We’ve more than doubled our speed in just over nine months.

We’ve focused on making the service lean, but you will find some helpful features. If you sign-in to your Google Account, you’ll see a list of URLs you’ve shortened in the past. Click the “details” link next to any of shortened URL and you’ll find public, real-time analytics data, complete with traffic over time, top referrers, and visitor profiles. This can be a great way to better understand who’s interested in your links, how they’re finding them and when they’re reading.

If you are looking to track your short URL's, I encourage you to look into Google URL Shortener,
Scott
