Step Out - Walk to Fight Diabetes 2011

Posted by

Come join us on October 1st, 2011 as we are walking and raising funds for the American Diabetes Association’s signature fund raising walk, Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes. Every step we take and every dollar we raise will make a difference in the lives of 25.8 million Americans living with diabetes.

Did you know that 1 in 3 children in the United States face a future with diabetes?

Every 20 seconds someone in this country is diagnosed with diabetes. The American Diabetes Association relies on the dollars raised through Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes to support their mission: to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. Every step we take and every dollar we raise helps to provide community-based education programs, protect the rights of people with diabetes and fund critical research for a cure.

Why Help Us Stop Diabetes?

Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. The cause of diabetes continues to be a mystery, although both genetics and environmental factors appear to play roles. There are 23.6 million Americans living with diabetes, a disease that is outpacing heart disease, cancer and AIDS. Diabetes is a disease that has deadly serious consequences, and there is no cure.

When you walk, you help Stop Diabetes.

Walking is one of the easiest, most relaxing forms of exercise for many people, but especially for those living with diabetes. Walking helps control blood glucose levels in people with diabetes and improves overall quality of life. It is also an activity that can help prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes in people at risk.

You can walk almost anywhere at any time. And walking can give you more energy and help relieve stress. It’s a simple, positive way to improve your health. You don't need expensive equipment, just a good pair of walking shoes!

And walking for the cause helps raise funds for the mission of the American Diabetes Association: to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.

What can you do to help?

  • Join our team and help us Stop Diabetes by raising funds to reach our goal!
  • Make a donation to support one our team members! No matter how small or large, your generous donation will help us stop diabetes.

Either way, you will be helping the Association provide community-based education programs, protect the rights of people with diabetes and fund critical research for a cure.

Do you know someone that has diabetes? Please make a donation on their behalf. Or ask them to join us as we walk to Stop Diabetes!

Stan Ridgway and his 'Neon Mirage' are coming back to Phoenix

Posted by

No, it's not a Neon Mirage, it's Stan Ridgway. And he's coming back again on the Neon Mirage tour. The last time Stan was in town (August 28th, 2010) he put on a really great show. Waiting in the rain in get in was a little frustrating (and wet), but Bob the swag man cut prices on the tour shirts, so we got a couple (they were dry!). Stan performed all of the songs from Neon Mirage plus some old favorites (Mexican Radio was one).

Stan Ridgway Neon Mirage

The Neon Mirage is still in my car, as it has become one of my favorite cd's to listen while driving. Stan's music style has always been alternative with a southwestern flair. The mixture of harmonica and flute on 'Desert of Dreams' is fantastic. The R & B feel of 'Scavenger Hunt' and 'Turn a Blind Eye' are classic Stan. And the instrumental 'Neon Mirage' reminds me of 'Rio Greyhound' from his first album, The Big Heat (circa 1985).

Stan Ridgway will be at the Rhythm Room, Saturday, February 5th, 2010 at 4:00 pm (it's an early show). Tickets are available at the Rhythm Room or Ticketmaster and are $18 advance purchase / $20 at the door and are on sale now.
